What are Pokémon?
Pokémon are creatures of all shapes and sizes that coexist with humans in nature. In the vast majority, Pokémon do not speak except to utter their names. Pokémon are created and commanded by their owners (so-called "Coaches"). During the adventures, the Pokémon grow and gain experience, and can even evolve into stronger Pokémon. Some Pokémon, such as Pikachu, Piplup and Charizard, have prominent roles in the video game series, in the game Illustrated Prints and TV shows, but they are just some of the nearly 500 creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe.
What are names of some popular Pokemon characters?
Easily the most iconic character in the series, Pikachu is the flagship Pokémon and the franchise’s original mascot. The tiny electric rodent is inseparable from Pokémon itself, and is one of the only characters likely to be recognized even by those with no knowledge of the series. While hardcore fans may not appreciate his oversaturation, there’s no denying Pikachu’s popularity.
The rarest and most powerful Pokémon in the series’ original “Red” and “Blue” incarnations, Metwo’s popularity was assured from the franchise’s start. A powerful psychic Pokémon, Mewtwo is hidden deep in the Unknown Dungeon, an area that only becomes accessible after players have completed the rest of the game.
Players start the original version of Pokémon by choosing one of three basic Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander. Representing three of the series’ major elemental types, either grass, water or fire, the original “starter” Pokemon evolve into some of the most powerful creatures in the game.
Pokémon Video Games
The first video games of the Pokémon were released for Nintendo Game Boy in 1998. Since then, the popularity of Pokémon has not stopped growing. Until now, Pokémon games have been released exclusively for Nintendo systems, including the Nintendo DS ™, the Nintendo GameCube ™ and the Wii ™ console.
In most games, the participant assumes the role of a young Coach whose journey involves traveling from town to town capturing and training Pokémon and fighting the Pokémon teams of other Coaches in a race to become the Pokémon League Champion. Another goal is to capture and catalog all the many Pokémon in the game world. All Pokémon have one or two types of intrinsic elements that reflect their strengths or weaknesses. For example, Water-type Pokémon have a natural advantage over Fire-type Pokémon which, in turn, have an advantage over Grass-type Pokémon, and so on. Despite the battles aspect of the games, they avoid explicit violence. A Pokémon never dies during a game. Coaches are invited to participate in many side activities during the game, including talent and beauty contests, tournaments and fishing (for Pokémon, of course!).
